While “America's Sports Car” started its life as a stylish but relatively tame boulevardier, it was relentlessly developed and substantially revised in both stylistic and mechanical terms soon after its debut. Beginning with the addition of Ed Cole’s compact, durable and efficient “small-block” V-8 in 1955, the Corvette was quickly guided by Zora Arkus-Duntov and his engineering team into nothing short of a track-tuned high-performance machine by 1960, with a sharper performance orientation than ever before.
New anti-sway bars and an aluminum clutch vastly improved the handling and performance capabilities of Chevrolet's roadster. Five small-block V-8s ranged from 230 to 315 bhp in 1960, and available transmissions included a two-speed Powerglide automatic and a four-speed manual unit. Stylistically, the 1958-1960 Corvette represents the second-to-last iteration of the inaugural C1 Corvette platform, and it features the most intricate chrome detailing ever offered, along with numerous interior upgrades.
