If it weren’t for a points system where only the best five results counted towards the World Championship then Hill would have clinched his first Formula 1 title in fairly easy fashion—instead, Jim Clark could secure the championship if he won the South African Grand Prix.

Clark and Hill occupied the front row of the grid with only 0.3 seconds between them in qualifying. At the drop of the flag, a hard-charging Clark clearly felt the pressure to win and stretched out his lead as best he could. This may not have been the best tactic over a 200-mile race as an oil leak sprung from his Lotus 25 and forced his retirement. A mature drive from Hill at the wheel of a Tony Rudd-designed BRM P578 saw him secure victory with nearly 50 seconds in hand over Bruce McLaren.

This remarkable trophy represents one of the defining moments in Hill’s superb career and it deserves a place in any major motorsport memorabilia collection.
