As 1904 ended, the Cadillac Automobile Company prepared some noteworthy new models. Chief among them was the new four-cylinder Model D, a 30 horsepower front-engine car on a whopping 100-inch wheelbase. Demand for the single-cylinder cars remained high, however, so new Models E and F were introduced, the former a runabout and the latter offered as a four-passenger tourer, or a delivery car. Models E and F had the radiator mounted at the front of an “engine hood”, in the style of a front-engine car, although the engine remained under the seat.
Believed to be a Model F built at the end of 1904, this car was dated as such by the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain in the 1960s. It has participated in the prestigious London to Brighton Veteran Car Run and is presently titled by its VCC Dating Certificate number. Reportedly sold new in Great Britain, it is believed that the car was owned by the family of record-setting English racer Sir Malcolm Campbell. The car is equipped with British-style lamps and accessories and a body in the British style, all of which add credence to its English heritage.
Although an older restoration, the condition of the car is quite good overall. It is painted blue, to good effect, and upholstered in leather. The chassis and underbody are very good, and the tyres are excellent. After years of maintenance in the Sichel Collection, the car continued to run and drive well. Purchased by its current owner in 2010, it remains ideal for one- and two-cylinder touring, and it is a perfect candidate for the London to Brighton Run, particularly since it is offered with an entry to this year’s event!
