The Porsche 930 is also known as a 911 Carrera. In the 1987 model year the Carrera’s catalytic-converter engine was reworked for 95-octane unleaded fuel. They were fitted with the new G50 manual transmission, which was easier to use and stronger thanks to BorgWarner synchromesh. Car and Driver magazine commented that “the Turbo is a surprisingly modest car – almost too much so. There is little blatant visual drama beyond the classic shape, the whale tail spoiler and the compound curves of its wildly flared flanks.”
This Porsche 930 is equipped with a 3,164-cc, 282-hp flat six-cylinder engine that is teamed up with a five-speed manual transaxle. The four-wheel disc brakes provide stopping power in a safe, predictable manner. A large intercooler is housed within the “tea-tray” rear spoiler. This 930 is painted in red with a complementary tan interior. Though this car is a high performance racecar in street clothing, it is still equipped with power brakes, power windows, air conditioning and an AM/FM radio.
The 1987 930 Turbo, of which 1,695 were built for the U.S. market and another 786 for the “Rest of the World,” was capable of a blistering 160-mph top speed. The 930 could do 0- to 60-mph in about 4.9 seconds; compared to that of select Ferraris or Corvette who had a hard time breaking eight seconds. This vehicle illustrates the advancements that Porsche was making in a dedicated fashion over the years with the continuing goal of outperforming their competitors.
