If ever there was an auto manufacturer to take lessons learned on the track and apply them to their street cars, it was Jaguar. The legendary D-Type was a formidable competitor on the track and Jaguar included all its best traits when the E-Type made its debut in 1961. Arguably the most well recognized sports car of its era, the E-Type had a perfect combination of curvaceous lines, high-performance and affordable price. This winning combination helped establish it as an instant hit and its popularity has only grown stronger.
The evolution of the E-Type is well documented. The initial famous 3.8 liter model lacked footwell space, had uncomfortable seats, massive brake fade and an engine prone to overheating – yet it was loved. Ten years and numerous improvements later, Jaguar launched a V-12 engine in its E-Type, which provided it with lots of torque and horsepower. The V-12 was not the only improvement for the third and final series of E-Types – it was now well appointed with features while drivability benefited from power steering and power brakes. The result was a very fine and quite sophisticated grand touring car.
With a 5.3-liter, 272 horsepower V-12, and a fully-synchronized five-speed manual gearbox, the final-series cars are very capable and refined Grand Touring machines, while also retaining the sensuous lines of their predecessors. Today, they rightly continue to captivate legions of collectors and marque enthusiasts and are ever growing in popularity.
Offered here, finished in green, is a representation of one of the last of the great E-Type Roadsters. This Series III E-Type is a handsome example that is for any enthusiast of the marque.
