At Porsche, the philosophy has always followed the pattern to design, test, produce and continuing improvement of the brand. The new-for-1983 Porsche 928S embodied this tradition, and was proudly announced as the successor to the 928 model. The displacement of the liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, aluminum alloy V-8 engine was increased to 4.7-liters and the output in turn increased to 234 horsepower. With a top speed of approximately 145-mph, the 928S reached 0- to 50-mph in 5.2 seconds.
The 928S transaxle design placed the engine in the front and the transmission towards the rear to produce a nearly-perfect 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution for improved handling and more balanced braking properties. The creation of a high polar moment of inertia reduced pitching, resisted crosswinds and increased directional control. The 928S’ unique Weissach rear axle optimized rear-wheel alignment during deceleration, braking and while cornering. A kinematic effect changes toe-out to toe-in in no more than an advertised .02 seconds to assist in controlling oversteer.
The 928S exhibits an aerodynamic design that includes integral front and rear spoilers to reduce lift and improve road holding. To optimize the driver’s performance and enjoyment, standard equipment included an adjustable tilt steering column and gauge cluster, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel vented four-wheel disc brakes, power driver’s seat, cruise control, electrically heated and adjustable sideview mirrors, retractable halogen headlights with power spray-washing system and automatic climate control (this example is in need of service). You could choose either a five-speed manual transmission or a new-for-1983 four-speed automatic. This Porsche utilizes the automatic. When new, this was a nearly $45,000 car that in many ways paved the way for a long line of luxury-oriented sports cars that have subsequently followed.
Additional features on this 928S include a desirable factory power-operated sunroof, new tie-rod ends, new transmission filter, new dash pad, new front damper and has had paint detailing completed. The black interior has red accents, and the car is accompanied by its owner's manual in its pouch. An aftermarket JVC CD player with an added large rear speaker will provide the appropriate soundtrack for your forthcoming motoring adventures.
