Here is surely a superb one-off creation in motordom; not only in its size, but a general impression of elegance that adapts to any surrounding. The Model J Duesenberg offered a 153.5-inch long wheelbase chassis; this particular machine is built on a 157-inch wheelbase chassis and is proudly stated to be “huge” with an uppercase “H,” checking in at 19-feet in overall length.
This beauty was custom-built by well-known U.S. coachbuilder Bayliff out of Lima, Ohio. They spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and several years to build this car, which was a prototype for what was going to be a limited run of these cars. Unfortunately, they never built any others just like this. Perhaps needless to say, that makes this one even more exclusive.
This 1949 Packard custom Bayliff LeBaron was built in 2003 and is presented in maroon with a tan Haartz cloth soft-top and soft tan leather interior; the top boot is also in tan leather. The seats are accented with burgundy-toned piping. It is a comfortable four-seater with Darrin-style seats and center console, plus it is powered by a 5.4-liter, 260-hp V-8 engine with dual exhaust that is mated to an automatic transmission. The vehicle is well-equipped and stylishly outfitted with a beautifully presented dashboard with gauges and features that include air conditioning, electric locking trunk, AM/FM/CD, banjo steering wheel, real knock-off 100-spoke chrome wire wheels, wide whitewall tires, driving lights, dual rearview mirrors, Duesenberg-style exhaust tips, fender skirts, driving lights, back-up light; power top, windows, steering and four-wheel disc brakes.
This special car is reported to be titled as a 1949 Packard, so you can straightforwardly register and insure it properly. The radiator shell, hood sides, rear fender skirt details and hood ornament all carry heavy Packard influences, as does the visual of the engine detail. It is further reported as having been sparingly used since its 2003 built date and has always been garaged and pampered, as you would expect. It displays classic elegance of the 1930s, combined with trouble-free modern drivetrain and easy maintenance. This may be the ultimate way to immediately gain a certain “celebrity status” wherever you may travel in the “king of the hill” type of car.
