Long appreciated for its timeless style and excellent driving dynamics, this Mercedes-Benz is both a valuable collector car and a very satisfying car to drive from the final model year of 280SL production. This timeless machine is powered by a 170-cid, 162-hp inline six-cylinder engine that is connected to a four-speed automatic transmission that are strong and smooth.

The example offered here is a two-owner automobile, and it is offered by a well-known collector. It is completely unmodified from original and still retains its original steering wheel, radio and desirable removable “pagoda” hardtop. This U.S. specification car is equipped with factory air conditioning – a much desired feature, and the original Mercedes-Benz books also accompany the car.

This 280SL has been meticulously maintained and is an excellent running and driving example. It readily starts and idles with incredible smoothness and makes for a wonderful motoring experience, being able to drive in total confidence.

Having received one repaint in its original white color, this 280SL is completely rust-free and comes to Auctions America fresh out of a soft restoration. It has a new convertible top in a blue tone that complements the interior, cosmetic re-freshening, re-stuffed seats, completely refinished wood veneer, new blue pinstripe and new, correct whitewall tires.

Being one of just 830 total 280SLs produced for the 1971 model year; it is ideal for a collection, a special night out or to run in a rally. Mercedes-Benz marketed this car as “the sum total of everything the Mercedes-Benz engineers have learned about high-performance sporting machinery.” Over four decades later, we could not agree more.
