By 1933 the Great Depression had a full grip on the luxury car market. Chrysler was able to sell only 151 cars in its top-of-the-line CL series – only 36 of which were Phaetons. Beginning with the Chrysler Imperial Eight in 1931, the Imperial took major steps forward by wrapping its new straight-eight engine in bodywork of classic beauty.
Model year 1933 would be Chrysler’s culmination of this design era. With their long-wheelbase chassis, graceful fender lines, long hood and a dramatic beltline accented on the elegant LeBaron-designed bodies, the Imperials are considered to be among the best looking classics of the era. Features included Delco Remy ignition, Lockheed hydraulic brakes, “Floating Power” automatic vacuum clutch, coincidental starter and freewheeling, automatic heat control, downdraft carburetion and safety glass throughout. Wire wheels and a trunk were standard on Phaetons.
This would be the last year for classic styling in the big CL series; the revolutionary Airflow era would begin in 1934.
