428-cid, 360-hp OHV V-8 engine, three-speed C-6 automatic transmission, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and front-disc, rear-drum power hydraulic brakes. Wheelbase: 108-inches

Shelby Automotive had outgrown its California plant adjacent to Los Angeles International Airport, so production was moved to Ionia, Michigan, with the start of the 1968 model year. Mustangs were built at Ford’s Metuchen, New Jersey, plant, then shipped by rail to A.O. Smith Corporation, long-time industry supplier, in Michigan for the Shelby touches, final assembly and delivery preparation.

The cars received the standard 1968 Mustang changes, as well as some Shelby-unique upgrades. The GT 500’s 428-cid engine was now rated at 360-hp, with a 735-cfm Holley four-barrel. The interiors moved upmarket, with vinyl wood trim and a center console that met the dashboard and contained the Stewart Warner ammeter and oil pressure gauges. Both fastbacks and convertibles had roll bars, and a new steering wheel in the Thunderbird style replaced the 1967 three-spoke item. Transmission and axle ratio choices, however, remained the same.

Original when purchased by a former owner in 2003, this 1968 GT 500 was completely restored at that time to the highest standards. Paint, chrome, chassis, engine compartment, exhaust system and tires were all re-done, but the interior was so good that it was preserved.

The Shelby is painted in the original Lime Gold, a metallic green. It has excellent contours and brightwork, while the appearance of the interior belies its original condition. The engine compartment is nicely detailed and the undercarriage has the correct original red primer showing. There is also evidence of recent use, showing that the car has been enjoyed to the fullest. Optional Shelby ten-spoke wheels are mounted with Firestone F7-15 Wide Oval tires.

Extensively equipped, with visibility group, wheel lip moldings, sport deck rear seat, power brakes, extra cooling package, AM radio, windshield washers, interior décor group and tachometer, it comes with a Marti report and copy of the original build sheet. It is also listed in the Shelby American Registry. Produced on November 16, 1967, it was six days ahead of schedule at the Metuchen, New Jersey plant. It was then shipped to Schanzmeyer Ford, Inc., in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Among the most desirable of Shelby Mustangs, this GT 500 is remarkable for its original features and superb restoration of the rest of the car. As one of 1,050 GT 500s in the 1968 model year, it joins only 49 others in its paint-trim combination.
