In production from 1965 to 1969, the reference 6240 was the first Daytona to incorporate screw-down pushers and thus became the first waterproof Cosmograph model to be produced by Rolex. Manufactured solely in stainless steel, the chronograph also features an acrylic tachometer bezel calibrated to 200. There were a few different dial variations found on reference 6240. Early examples such as the present watch are distinguished by the lack of ‘Oyster’ written on the dial, not yet referring to the screw-down pushers. The present watch is further fitted with a highly attractive ‘Paul Newman’ exotic dial, characterized by its square markers in the chronograph scale and subsidiary dials, as well as the alternating patterning of the coloration. Between the 1960s to 1980s, it is believed that for every 20 normal Daytona dials, there would be one exotic dial made, making it highly desirable. This watch was serviced by Rolex Restoration in 2022.

The Atelier de Restoration is meant for the brand's most iconic models. Before the restoration, the watchmaker verifies the authenticity of the components of the watch. Overall, during the restoration process, they will preferably restore components rather than change them. For the parts that need changing, they will be crafted with strong attention to the original aesthetics. For the owner, it was very important to keep any original spare parts and remain the dial untouched. After the first owner graduated from Mechanical and Marine Engineering (MEng) at the University of Sunderland in England wearing the Rolex 6240 he travelled around the world and made a great impact in the maritime industry. He was also nominated and held awards globally for his innovative solutions and for becoming one of the pioneers always wearing his Daytona. Over the years the watch took his racing icon's nickname and became the icon of watches.
