In 1980 U.S. emissions would lead to the demise of the Porsche 930. It was pulled from the U.S. market and wouldn’t return until 1986. If drivers could not have the performance of the turbo powered Porsche, they at least wanted the aggressive looks of the Turbo. This opening in the market was a gold mine for aftermarket tuners that started turning normal 3.2’s into “turbo-look” cars. Many people tried their hand at this tuning, which mostly included body modifications. Porsche took notice of what the aftermarket tuners were doing, and realized that they were losing money. So in 1984 Porsche began offering a M491 option on the 3.2 Carrera. This desired option would remain available from 1984 to 1989. It allowed consumers to finally order a naturally aspirated Carrera with everything the Turbo variant had, minus the Turbo of course.

This turbo-look option was not cheap. Prices for the M491 option ranged from $10,000 to $15,000 extra, depending on the year that you ordered your Porsche. The options that came with the “look” were: the wide-body, turbo whale-tail, turbo wrap-around chin spoiler, turbo suspension, wheels and tires, turbo brakes with cross-drilled rotors and four-piston calipers, and a noticeable improvement in handling over the standard Carrera.

The highly optioned 911 Targa offered here is finished in White with matching Grand Prix White forged wheels (Code 348), and of course the Turbo Look (Code 491). The interior is completed in Burgundy leather, along with a sport steering wheel with elevated hub (Code 018), “Reno” radio (Code 158), high intensity windscreen washer (Code 286), headlamp washer (Code 288), central locking system (Code 341), left sport seat (Code 383), right sport seat (Code 387), automatic heating control (Code 424), automatic speed control (Code 454), and an alarm system (Code 533). Under the bonnet is a 3.2-liter flat six-cylinder engine producing 220-hp. Connected to the engine is a G50, five-speed manual transmission that transfers power to a locking differential (Code 220).

The Porsche is showing 78,000 miles on the odometer, believed to be original miles, and comes complete with factory books, receipts and tools. This is an ultra-rare Turbo Look option, with only a reported 17 produced in 1987 as Targa models.
