The Continental Mark II was a two-door personal luxury car with European flair that showed a new direction for Ford Motor Co. The Continental Mark II was one of few elite automobiles of the 1950s that was coveted by the rich and famous. Some examples ended up in the hands of such celebrities as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Louis Prima and President Dwight D. Eisenhower to name but a few.
Ford originally planned to build about 2,000 Mark IIs a year for five years. The reality turned out to be 2,550 built in the 1956 model year and 444 in 1957. It is reported that approximately 1,500 examples are still in existence, making for a very desirable slice of automotive history. In the 1957 model year only two convertibles were produced.
The owner of this vehicle narrates that he had purchased this car in 1963, then had it fully restored at a shop that was famous for restoring cars for all the Hollywood celebrities back in the day. Money was not an object in the restoration, each individual piece was removed from the car and the body was sent to the finest place in San Diego to have the metal work completed.
Only 98 of the 444 Mark ll’s built in 1957 came with the optional air conditioning. Power steering, brakes, windows and seats plus whitewall tires were standard. A large 6.0-liter V-8 that is capable of producing 300 horsepower is hidden under the hood. It is conjoined with a Turbo-Drive three-speed automatic transmission. This car is covered in a beautiful metallic gold (which is believed to be individually special ordered, but cannot be confirmed) paintjob that is complemented by a Beige interior.
