The Mercedes-Benz W113 was created as the replacement for the 300SL and 190SL. This class of Mercedes included the 230SL, 250SL and the 280SL. The only engine option was an inline-six cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection. Many exterior panels were made from aluminum like door skins, hoods and trunk lids. This was done to reduce the weight of the roadster. The 280SL lasted from 1967-1971 and was surely an automobile ahead of its time. Many standard features were seen on these roadsters that were uncommon for the time. Standard equipment included fuel injection, power disc brakes at all four corners, radial tires, adjustable bucket seats and an electric clock. These became iconic for their large “fishbowl” headlights and the simplistic grille design with a large Mercedes emblem in the center.
This particular Mercedes-Benz 280SL is said to still be in original condition, and the odometer shows just over 29,000 miles. The inline six-cylinder 2,778-cc engine puts out 170-hp and is paired to an automatic transmission with the option of a floor-shifter. Other options on this classy Mercedes include power steering, a Becker radio, bumper guards, whitewall radial tires and air conditioning. Finished in white with a deep red interior, this 280SL is stunning. Included in the sale are both tops and a great deal of pertinent paperwork. It is noted that both fenders still have their original “notches”, something usually overlooked during a restoration.
