The Avanti was Studebaker’s last gasp at innovation. Brainchild of president Sherwood Egbert, it was designed in Palm Springs, California, by a Raymond Loewy team in just six weeks. Fiberglass was chosen for the body in a matter of expediency, and a Lark convertible chassis was pressed into service. The basic “R-1” version used a “Jet Thrust” version of Studebaker’s 298-cid V-8, enhanced with a four-barrel carburetor, high-lift cam and dual exhaust. A supercharged R-3 was available and, briefly, a bored and supercharged R-3.

Ordered by television and film star Dick Van Dyke, this R-1 Avanti was delivered to him in December 1962. He kept it only a short while, as the second owner was with it for 32 years, selling to the current owner early in 1995. White with maroon interior, it has deep red carpets, all in excellent condition. Contours, paint and brightwork are similarly excellent. The engine compartment is very clean, although the undercarriage shows some recent use. Equipped with power steering, power brakes, air conditioning and an AM radio, it presents very well and will be an excellent addition to any collection.
