By the early 1970s, the Porsche 911 had hit its stride, and its iconic shape had become instantly recognizable to a future generation of collectors. Aside from the RS homologation specials, the “S” variant was the top production car specification, and 1973 was a desirable, watershed year in particular, before regulations mandated such undesirable modifications like larger bumpers.
This lovely European-spec 911S Targa was completed at the factory with the following options: Gemini Blue metallic paint, Pirelli tires and tinted rear window with defroster. Its original owner, a Mr. Haack, imported it to Jacksonville, Florida shortly after its acquisition where he cherished it for nearly 30 years, until June 2001. The second owner, Mr. Ham, also of Jacksonville, kept the car until 2007 when he sold it to a west coast Porsche enthusiast who supervised a full nut-and-bolt restoration that took several years and cost in excess of $80,000.
The high-quality restoration was entrusted to various west coast specialists including Haus of Performance and Ray Stevens, who rebuilt the engine and transmission with all of the best available technology and components. The drivetrain refurbishment alone cost over $30,000. The body was stripped to bare metal and repaired as needed in preparation for a repaint in the original and desirable factory color of Gemini Blue metallic. The interior was stripped and carefully restored using correct materials by Autos International. A very hard-to-find original dash pad with speaker grille was sourced and installed. In line with the sporting nature of a factory “S” model, a period-correct set of sport seats and tracks were purchased and installed in place of the standard seats. The Fuchs wheels were restored to better than new condition by Al Reed, and new Pirelli tires were fitted, completing the ‘right look.’ Included in the sale of this exceptional 911S is a large history file that includes receipts for all recent restoration work, a certificate of authenticity from Porsche and a tool kit. Indicated mileage stands at 72,000 kms. The opportunity to acquire a 911S of this caliber may not come again soon.
