In 1978, Chevrolet honored the Corvette with a Silver Anniversary edition. The Indy 500 went one better and honored it with pace car duty for the 1978 running of its race.

To commemorate the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car selection, Chevrolet gave the Corvette a black over silver paint with subtle red stripes, unique to this model spoilers, interior trim and Indy 500-specific badging and decals for the exterior. These decals were shipped separately to allow the buyer the option of applying them. This particular Corvette does not display the full graphics, showing only “Limited Edition” and the famous IMS “Wheel and Wings” logo.

This is the first year of Indy 500 Pace Car honors for the Corvette. All factory replicas were equipped with glass T-tops, polished alloy wheels, power windows, rear defogger, air conditioning, sport mirrors, tilt-telescope steering column, heavy-duty battery, power door locks, and an AM/FM stereo. The Vette runs with a 350-cidV-8 engine and automatic transmission.

With few miles showing on the odometer, this is like buying a 1978 pace car Corvette brand new. The factory pricing sticker is still adhered to the window and the plastic covers for the seats were never removed after shipping. The overall condition of the car reflects this low mileage. With all of this in mind, one has an ideal opportunity to have a 1978 Corvette that can be driven or preserved; either makes it an ideal car.
