In recent years, GMC light trucks have been lightly dressed-up Chevys. This was not always so. Although using mostly Chevrolet truck sheet metal since the 1930s, GMC marched to its own drummer for mechanical components. Sometimes, as in the 1930s and again for 1955-57 V-8s, they came from Pontiac. Other times, as with this truck, the engine was engineered by the division itself.

More than just a Chevy Stovebolt with more cubic inches, the “Jimmy” engine, as it was called, was tougher throughout. The block was physically longer, connecting rods stronger, metallurgy better. The GMC had full-pressure lubrication and insert bearings, all-important in commercial service. In the 1947-55 “Advance Design” era, GMCs had just enough trim differences to hallmark all that was better underneath.

This GMC pickup is the 100-22 long-wheelbase version, with correspondingly larger pickup box. A high-quality restoration, it is equipped with heater, radio, Trico windshield fan, spot light, windshield visor, fog lights, dual side-mounted spare tires, whitewall tires and wheel trim rings. A rare sight in the collector community, it is one fine “Jimmy.”
