When Cadillac introduced its first two-door hardtop in 1949 it chose the name Coupe DeVille, an elegant term from the carriage era, where it meant an enclosed four-wheel vehicle for two passengers. The name has had many connotations in the automotive world, but at Cadillac it meant unambiguously “two-door hardtop coupe” for a decade.

This 1958 Series 62 Coupe is as new an example as you’ll find. Driven barely 4,600 miles, believed to be from new, it is pristine in Daphne Blue. Overall, it is immaculate with the blue-and black interior showing to be excellent, as is all of the brightwork. Equipped with power steering and power brakes, it has a Wonderbar radio, windshield washers but manual windows. The engine compartment is clean as original, while underneath the car looks absolutely new. It has clearly been sheltered and nurtured its entire life.

For 1959, Cadillac applied the DeVille name to a series slightly more upscale than the 62, and added a four-door Sedan DeVille. This car, then, is the last for which “DeVille” meant “Coupe” and vice versa.
