After winning the World Sports Car Championship from 1970 through 1972, Porsche responded to the FIA’s swing from prototypes to production-based machinery, selecting the 911 S for Group 4 homologation. Extensive modifications included lightweight steel and glass, a larger fuel-injected 2.7-litre engine and upgraded braking and suspension. Named the 2.7 RS (RS for “Rennsport” or racing), it was immediately successful and begat the radical RSR.
This LHD example is the 38th 2.7 RS produced, and therefore, one of the first 500s built to “RSH” specification to meet FIA homologation requirements. After having been driven to Stuttgart for weighing, it was driven back to the factory for completion as a “Touring” (Porsche Code 472) version. It was highly equipped from new, with such factory options as front and rear bumpers with impact absorbers (Code 058), leather-trimmed Recaro sport seats (Code 409), a rear luggage compartment in place of rear seats (Code 419), white fog-type head lamps (Code 429), a right-hand “Comfort” seat (Code 438), an electric radio antenna and four speakers (Code 461), green-tinted side glass and a graduated-tint windscreen (Code 468), an engine-compartment light (Code 482) and a sunroof (Code 650).
Formerly owned by a historic racing driver and acquired in 2007 by the current owner/collector who commissioned an engine-out restoration, this 2.7 RS was also refinished in its original colour scheme and retains its matching numbers engine. Listed in John Starkey’s From R to GT3R: The Racing Porsches 911 & 930 and complete with restoration invoices, this is one of Porsche’s finest competition-bred road cars.
