Introduced in 1954, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta provided further proof that the storied marque could thrive in an era of smaller cars powered by smaller engines. What’s more, its modern unibody construction method apparently did little to limit designers’ creativity; launched as a coupe, the stylish Giulietta family grew to include a four-door Berlina, the convertible Spider—which was bodied by Pinin Farina—as well as more limited coachbuilt variants.

Though each Giulietta was built around the rev-happy 1.3-liter Twin Cam alloy block inline-four, performance options were similarly diverse; this Spider Veloce sits near the top of the lineup’s performance range. Thanks to dual carburetors and a higher compression ratio, its engine produced 89 horsepower—a substantial bump over a standard Giulietta’s 52 horsepower, and enough to propel the car well past the 100-mph mark.

This car, one of only 1,203 Giulietta Spider Veloces produced, was delivered new to a gentleman in Ohio, who soon moved to California; an enthusiastic amateur racer, he entered it in SCCA events until career and family obligations intervened. Under his care, the car’s exterior—including brightwork—was painted completely white. This feature was maintained faithfully by its subsequent owners, a noted Alfa Romeo mechanic (and proprietor of Alfa Performance Connection of Orange, California) and his wife.

Following the purchase by its third and current owner, the car was treated to a substantial overhaul, which included an upgrade to a 2.0-liter engine, a conversion from a four-speed manual to a five-speed manual transmission, a new exhaust system, and a front disc brake conversion, as well as the installation of a new convertible top and interior retrim. Work was performed by Alfa Performance Connection. The car presents nicely, having benefitted from relatively recent attention and its low mileage; its odometer displays just 31,464 miles.

Rare when new and desirable today, this Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce is, with its blend of Pinin Farina styling and uprated Twin Cam power, the ideal incarnation of the quintessential Italian convertible. It is offered with historical and restoration documentation, its original warranty card, and tools.
