- Most powerful production car that year

For 1955, the new Packard models were so revolutionary that the company started its model designation system over again, referring to the new line as the first series. And new they were: a brand new, high output, overhead valve V-8 engine with twin four-barrel carburetors, producing an amazing 310 horsepower, coupled to a new push-button Twin Ultramatic automatic transmission. An innovative new torsion-bar suspension featured automatic leveling, making the ’55 Packard the smoothest riding and best handling full-size car of the time. The styling was impressive across the board as it was modern, fresh and attractive. The top-of-the-line Caribbean featured striking three-tone paint schemes, two-tone leather interiors and an ornate dashboard and ornamentation layout.

For 1956, few changes were introduced, though a hardtop coupe was available in the Caribbean line for the very first time. Although most updates for ’56 were minor, one of the most attractive new features were the reversible seat cushions – leather on one side and elegant cloth on the other. At $5,495, the coupes were breathtaking in more ways than one.

This particular ’56 Caribbean Coupe is presented in an elegant three-tone Crème-Scottish Heather-Grey color combination. Its interior includes the unique reversible seat cushions finished in factory correct red and white leather on one side and jacquard cloth on the other. Options on the Caribbean include the Ultramatic Drive automatic transmission with push-button controls, a Hypalon vinyl-covered roof, power steering and brakes, electric windows and seat and much more.

In 2006 the Caribbean underwent a correct frame-on restoration by Custom Packard Auto Service, located in Santa Ana, California. This work included an extensive rebuild of the electrical and mechanical components as well as engine compartment detailing and a partial exterior repaint. Confirming its condition are the multiple Packards International and Packard Club awards it has received over the years. With only 2,400 miles driven since restoration in 2006, the 1956 Caribbean Hardtop is reportedly in superb condition. Then, as now, it is a luxury car for the true enthusiast.
