The FN (Fabrique Nationale) company of Belgium was similar to the BSA company of Britain, in that both companies manufactured military firearms and motorcycles for their respective armies. The flat-twin engines and shaft drives of the FN motorcycles were features later copied by the German BMW and Zundapp machines used during World War II. The FN 12T3 Tricar was preceded in production by the massive FN M12 motorcycle and sidecar combination built from 1937 to 1939. The FN 12T3 Tricar utilized the same 22-hp, 992-cc engine; along with the frame and front fork assembly as the FN M12 motorcycle. The rear frame was attached to an open body with a car-type rear axle and leaf spring suspension. The four-speed gearbox included a reverse gear and two-speed transfer box. The Tricar could handle an impressive payload of over 1,100-pounds. Its cargo area was manufactured in a number of different configurations. Variations included a personnel version with two rows of seats (with seating for four) plus the driver. The displayed cargo version generally carried ammunition, but it was also produced with an anti-aircraft machine gun mounted to the bed. Over 400 FN 12T3 Tricars were built between 1939 and 1940.
