A Dirty Trick by Peter Helck, c. 1972
Pen and ink on paper; framed with linen mat
20 in. x 21 in. (image: 12 in. x 14 in.)

This original pen and ink drawing depicts the fierce and sometimes dastardly competition witnessed during the sport’s nascent years. In the foreground, we see Lewis Stang leading the 1908 Briarcliff Trophy Race in his Isotta Fraschini, while his ride-along mechanic defends their position by pouring kerosene over the car’s hot exhaust—blinding the competition in a billowing wake of smoke.

Beautifully rendered by Peter Helck, Stang and his mechanic, unsurprisingly, would go on to win the Briarcliff Trophy that year. This is the original illustration from Helck’s book Great Auto Races (page 111), with ownership credit to Richard M. Roy. The image was also published in the March-April 1972 issue of Antique Automobile.
