• From the collection of Ray Bowersox

For 1951, Mercury introduced a new grille that was integrated with the signal lights. Furthermore, vertical taillights replaced the horizontal type found on the previous models. Lastly, new, lower, rear quarter panel trim made the wraparound bumper extend even further than before. The chromed gravel shields were standard for the higher trim line Monterey.

This example is a very nice driver-quality Monterey from 1951 and is one of approximately 1,500 examples built. For 1951, there were actually two different price levels for the Monterey, with the higher priced car, like the one offered here, having a vinyl top, at a cost of $2,127 before options. This example is further equipped with a Hi-Fidelity AM radio and bumper guards in the front and rear. It is finished in the factory color of Kent Gray Blue, complemented by red steel wheel discs, full wheel covers, and wide whitewall tires.

This car was restored some years ago and presents very well with excellent chrome and brightwork. The engine bay does show some signs of age, but it appears to be very correct and could easily be detailed. This Monterey has been meticulously maintained mechanically and we are informed it will need no recommissioning or other mechanical work, aside from the same type of meticulous regular maintenance it has received in the ownership of Ray Bowersox. The grey pleated cloth interior with brown bolsters, which match the top, is inviting and virtually unworn; it beckons a potential new owner to have a seat and take it for a test drive.
