Presented here is an exceptionally rare menu from the dinner held to celebrate Bentley’s third victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1928.

Held at Lyons Corner House in London on 27 July, the dinner was less than a month after Captain Woolf Barnato and Bernard Rubin piloted their 4½-Litre Bentley ‘Old Mother Gun’ to victory in what would be in the closest finish of all Bentley’s six wins at Le Mans. Not only did the pair have to battle the 4.9-litre Stutz of Brisson and Bloch throughout the race, but with 15 minutes to go, metal fatigue caused Old Mother Gun’s chassis to crack, detaching a water hose from the radiator. Barnato nursed the car to the finish through a combination of skill and the strength of his overheating Bentley engine, ensuring victory by just 7.9 miles after 24 hours of racing.
