383-cid, OHV V-8 engine, three-speed Hydra-Matic transmission, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with trailing arm coil spring suspension, and front-disc, rear-drum power hydraulic brakes. Wheelbase: 115-inches

Chevrolet’s car-based El Camino pickup was conceived from the full-size passenger car line in 1959, but the vast majority of its 26-year lifespan was spent on the intermediate A-body chassis.

By 1967, when this El Camino was built, a broad range of engines was offered, from a 140-hp, 230-cid six up to a hefty 350-hp 396 big-block. This one has a 350-cid small-block, but it’s way and above more potent than anything available when the truck was new.

Stroked to 383 cubic inches, the engine has 10.5 to 1 compression, a 671 Kuhl supercharger running with four 800-cfm carburetors and 8-percent underdrive and Mallory electronic distributor. The transmission is a Turbo 400 Hydra-Matic with 4,000-rpm stall a pistol-grip shifter, feeding a locker rear axle with 4.56 to 1 gears. The three-inch dual exhaust system is silenced with Flowmaster mufflers.

The body contours and black paint are both excellent, and the brightwork is very good, with a few surface scratches on stainless steel items. The custom interior is done in beige cloth. The seats have longitudinal pleats and red bowtie emblems on the backrests. It has a tilt steering column with APC six-spoke wheel, and an Auto Meter Shift-Lite Monster Carbon Fiber Monster tachometer. Auto Meter gauges for temperature and oil pressure are mounted to the lower edge of the dashboard. An AM/FM/cassette stereo is located in the original radio position.

The engine compartment gleams with polished aluminum, most prominently the valve covers, alternator, supercharger and air intake, the latter proudly projecting through the hood. The undercarriage is clean, painted black, but is not detailed. Boyd Coddington 17-inch wheels carry Kumho EcstaSupera blackwall radials, 275/40 in the rear and 215/40 in front.

A show winner at John Force, Good Guys and Boyd Coddington’s, this super El Camino has the best of everything: excellent pickup in every way.
