In October 1954, the Jaguar XK 120’s replacement was launched and given the name XK 140. The new car offered more interior space, a result of the engine being moved forward three inches, and more precise rack-and-pinion steering was fitted. The fixed head coupé iteration offered 2+2 seating. The standard engine produced 190 brake horsepower, whilst the Special Equipment (SE) version, with the C-Type head, produced 210 brake horsepower and had a top speed in excess of 135 mph.
The XK 120 was lauded the world over and tremendously successful in motor racing, so it is no surprise that Jaguar decided to carry over the best elements of the 120 when introducing the XK 140. And so Jaguar offered the same three body styles as its predecessor: the drophead, the roadster (open two-seater), and the fixed head coupé.
According to its JDHT certificate, the XK 140 SE Fixed Head Coupé presented here was originally finished in Birch Grey and exported to the United States in 1955. Today, the Jaguar shows 93,566 miles on its odometer and is finished in a stunning shade of dark blue with red leather hide. It is in very nice condition. The car benefited from over €10.000 worth of mechanical renovation in 2014 to bring it up to its current standard. The car is fitted with Schroth seatbelts, a fire extinguisher in the passenger foot well, a stop clock, and a battery isolator key. This XK 140 would be the perfect vehicle in which to enjoy historic endurance or regularity rallies around the globe.
En octobre 1954, la remplaçante de la Jaguar XK 120 lancée sous le nom de XK 140 gagnait en habitabilité grâce à l’avancement du moteur de 75 mm dans le châssis, bénéficiait d’une direction à crémaillère plus précise et la version coupé offrait une configuration 2+2. Le moteur normal délivrait 190 ch alors que la version SE (Special Equipment) dotée de la culasse type C délivrait 210 ch et atteignait en pointe plus de 215 km/h.
La XK 120 avait été louée dans le monde entier et ses succès en compétition étaient innombrables si bien que Jaguar, sans surprise, décida de reprendre les meilleurs éléments de la 120 en introduisant la 140. C’est ainsi que Jaguar proposa les trois mêmes types de carrosserie : le cabriolet, le roadster (ou biplace découverte) et le coupé (à toit fixe).
D’après le certificat du JDHT, la XK 140 SE Coupé présentée ici, peinte à l’origine en Birch Grey fut exportée aux Etats-Unis en 1955. Elle affiche aujourd’hui 149 705 km au compteur. Peinte dans un étonnant bleu foncé avec un intérieur en cuir rouge, elle se présente dans un très bel état. La voiture a bénéficié en 2014 de travaux mécaniques pour plus de €10 000 afin de la mettre à son niveau actuel. Elle est équipée de ceintures de sécurité Schroth, d’un extincteur sous l’auvent côté passager, d’un chronomètre et d’un coupe-batterie. Cette XK 140 fera un véhicule parfait pour disputer les rallyes historiques d’endurance et de régularité.
