Production of the Guzzi Alce began in 1939. The Alce was preceded by the Guzzi GT17 that was produced from 1932 to 1939. The Guzzi was nearly identical to the GT17. The most significant changes included a fourth gear and an indicator to show which gear the operator was using. The Alce was originally produced to provide mobility to the light machine gun companies of the Italian Army. The Alce was fitted with brackets for carrying the Model 37 Breda 8-mm machine gun, its tripod and ammunition boxes. The engine was a horizontal single-cylinder type with an external flywheel, nicknamed “salamislicer,” and twin air cleaners. The rear wheel had swing-arm suspension and the front featured a girder-type front fork with compression springs. On some versions, as displayed, a rear passenger seat was provided along with a retractable handlebar. In practice, the Alce would carry either an additional passenger or the machine gun and accessories --- never both at the same time. Other versions included tandem (sidecar), tricycle and two experimental prototypes---one fitted with skis for Alpine troop use and one bizarre attempt at a light armored machine gun carrier. More than 7,000 Guzzi Alces were built during WW II. This example is not fitted with armament.
