Addendum: Please note the only way to conclusively determine the age of such a bronze sculpture is through a metallurgical test. Nevertheless, experienced analysis of the detail, patina, period-correct hardware, and documentation of origin affirms RM Sotheby’s belief in the originality of this Spirit of Ecstasy dealership bronze and, as such, the catalog description remains accurate.
This attractive Spirt of Ecstasy appears to be of the fourth run of original dealership bronzes. This run had a more decorative base with polished features compared to the earlier dark mahogany patinaed bronzes. These sculptures were sent to overseas offices and representatives, incuding Bentley showrooms after the Bentley factory was taken over in 1931. Charles Sykes realized these were becoming collectible and rather than just producing them commercially for Rolls-Royce, he cast proofs for himself. This particular bronze is believed to be one of Sykes’ personal artist proofs. Standing an impressive 28 inches tall, it also includes a base and acrylic display case.
