Nineteen seventy-five marked the end of the mid-engined 914; unfortunately, its replacement, the 924, was not yet fully developed. Porsche had to produce a car for the popular-price market, yet they did not have the time to create an entirely new model. Thinking quickly, Porsche decided to marry the classic Volkswagen-based four-cylinder engine with the restyled G-series 911. They named it the 912 E, for Einspritzer, or fuel injection.

The last 912 had rolled off the line in 1969—since then, Porsche had made several upgrades. The 912 E was based off the 911 2.7 body, and it took a practiced eye to tell the difference. Mechanically, the engine was identical to the previous 914’s, except for the addition of the K-Jetronic fuel-injection system. The fuel injection increased performance of the four-cylinder engine to 90 horsepower and produced top speeds of 115 mph. At the time, the 912 E was well regarded, and Road & Track proclaimed, “It’s a car with almost all the sporting virtues of the more expensive 911 S.”

Presented here in its original combination of Arrow Blue (color code 305-9-2) over a black interior, this 912 E is one of the finest such examples available today. Recent service and restoration work have been carried out at Porsche North Houston, one of only 11 Porsche Classic Partner dealerships in the United States. Despite the near 162,000-mile odometer indication, Porsche Classic centers guarantee the best possible standards of maintenance and repair with specialist knowledge and experience. Invoices are included on file with work totaling approximately $11,500 to ensure that the 912 is ready for its next owner. This example has also been through the Porsche Classic certification process, confirming the originality of major components, including engine and transmission. Rarely does such a fine example of the one-year-only 912 E come up for sale.

The owner’s Arrow Blue 911 GT3 inspired him to accent-match this 912 E to the GT3. And so, the 912 E’s wheels were painted in Chalk (modern color reminiscent of the historic Fashion Grey or Dolphin Grey) and a “PORSCHE” script was affixed to the sides in Chalk vinyl color. The 912 E was displayed along with matching Arrow Blue 911 GT3 in Porsche’s North American headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, in the Heritage Museum Gallery, along with a pair of classic and modern 911 Rs.
