The W140 series is widely considered to be the last ‘over-engineered’ Mercedes, developed during a time when the engineers, rather than accountants, had the final say in how a model was developed.

This example of the S600 coupé is noteworthy for its AMG ‘power pack’, which raised the V-12 engine’s power output to 439 bhp thanks to aggressive camshafts, pistons and connecting rods, as well as a computerised remap of the original ECU. It also has special AMG additions to the interior, subtly hinting at its potential.

Finished in Polar White over exclusive-department Mushroom leather, it was originally delivered to Japan in March 1996, where it resided until 2017, when it was exported to Switzerland by its current owner. This is a true wolf in sheep’s clothing, from an era when Mercedes-Benz set the standard in automotive engineering and innovation.
