The Weisenhorn Carriage Company of Helena, Montana, was established in 1873 by August Weisenhorn, and operated for 26 years before closing in 1899. Weisenhorn carriages and stagecoaches were renowned for their craftsmanship; built light and sturdy for the rough roads and extreme weather conditions of Montana territory, they were the premier choice of transportation in the late-19th century.

Though commonly used for passenger transport, this example was used for mail delivery in the Helena, Fort Benton, Lincoln, and Montana areas, delivering mail to and from Flesher Pass. The coach also delivered mail to many small Montana mining towns, such as Johnstown, Marysville, and Lump City. Railway mail service gradually replaced coach services around the turn of the 20th century, but this Flesher Stagecoach was likely used for local deliveries well into the 1920s.

Finished in vibrant red with yellow spoke wheels and lettered “U.S. Mail Flesher Stage” along the sides, this Weisenhorn stagecoach was meticulously restored to its original condition in 2011 and has been in storage since then. Original, hand-forged iron was even used throughout the restoration process.
