The 1967 Geneva Motor Show heralded the 230 SL’s successor, the 2,496-cubic-centimeter 250 SL. Production had begun in December 1966, and while the new model retained the strong points of its predecessor, it made new strides in drivability with the larger engine and rear disc brakes. The 280 SL, with its 2.8-liter inline-six engine, debuted in late 1967 and displayed further improvements.

This US-market 280 SL “Pagoda,” as the model was known due to its distinctive hardtop, is one of 630 examples produced in August 1969. It is clad in the alluring combination of white over blue complete with a blue convertible top. The car’s trim tag shows that was equipped from the factory with power steering and a four-speed automatic transmission.

Acquired by the consignor in 2017 and imported to Ontario, Canada after several decades spent in California, an extensive folder of invoices dating back 1993 exhibit a thorough history of discerning owners. Since 2011, the car has been furnished to over $65,000 USD of mechanical and cosmetic servicing; notable expenditures include an engine rebuild executed in January 2014, and a refreshment of the fuel system in June 2018. A nearly complete quantity of hoses, bushings, linkages, belts, mounts, and consumables have similarly been replaced in the last few years. The car’s transmission, distributor, and water and fuel pumps have also experienced rebuilds courtesy of professional specialists.

This attractive 280 SL is now accompanied by a spare, jack, repair manual, and service invoices dating back to 1993.
