Melbourne Brindle was an Australian-American illustrator and painter well-known for his portraits of automobiles. He was also an antique car collector and restorer. His talent and passion for cars were perfectly matched for many marketing campaigns, including almost every Packard advertisement from 1946–50 as well as GM’s 1949 Annual Report and their Famous GM Cars: A General Motors Family Album. His artwork even introduced the Thunderbird for Ford in 1955.
This painting depicts a 1914 Mercer Raceabout sitting in wait by the checkered flag on a beach as an approaching storm appears on the horizon. It is unclear if the Mercer is waiting for fellow competitors to arrive or if it is quietly lingering after a successful race. The pensive work is neatly framed and features the artist’s signature on the lower right corner.
